"Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Comedy" was in the running to receive a nomination for an Emmy. The FYC (For Your Consideration), by GUY TORRY, REGGIE. HUDLIN, and LUENELL panels were done but unfortunately it did not receive the nomination. GUY stated that to even be considered was comforting to know.
When GUY TORRY found out that "PHAT TUESDAYS: THE ERA OF HIP HOP COMEDY" had received 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, to him was. just as prestigious as getting nominated for an Emmy. He states that he didn't even know that it was that hard to receive one. He was honored.
In 2023 Guy Torry was honored by Uptown Magazine's annual Honor Awards for Phat Tuesdys comedy contributions to the community. Guy was humbled and appreciative by the recognition for his work. It's an honor that Guy will always cherish.
This was a journey that started in about 2008. Guy Torry was on flight to Sacramento and Comedian Michael Blackson mentioned to Guy that he missed Phat Tuesdays and the new generation of comedians need to know important it was. From there, the idea to do a story on it was born.
After several years of research and digging through the archives and conducting interviews, Guy Torry took a demo reel to his team at Innovative Artists Agency and they were blown away with what he had shown them. Babette Perry started making phone calls almost immediately. That got the ball rolling and the magic started to happen.
Guy Torry had a friend who recommended that he should take the project over to Grammet. Garment is a production company started by Actor Kelsey Grammer. and were looking for urban projects. They were blown away by the story and wanted build a relationship with Guy and take Phat Tuesdays to the market place. That would start a partnership that made in heaven.
Grammnet had a. development deal with Fremantle. Fremantle produces several game shows, unscripted shows as well as scripted ones. For some reason Phat Tuesdays was put on the back burner and it's fate was in jeopardy. Guy Torry's dream project was on the verge of being shelved probably forever. But there was still some interest in it from one of its sub companies.
Original Productions is a production company that focuses on unscripted projects. It was acquired by Fremantle and it became their home for documentaries. Grammnet still very much believed in the Phat Tuesdays project asked Fremantle if they could take a crack at producing it. New life was blown into the PT and it would be a great fit.
The team had meeting with several production companies. There were some who were interested and some who passed. Then Covid 19 hit and the project once again seemed like it was not going to happened but team did not let that stand in the way. Through zoom calls and emails, Phat Tuesdays found a home and a great partner with Amazon Studios and Alyssa Russo would guide it through.
Like most projects several directors was discussed. Names you know and name you don't but were great directors. Guy Torry had already had conversations with his home town friend and super TV & Film director, producer Reginald Hudlin.
Guy had talked to him about it several years prior. Hudlin was regular at Phat Tuesdays so he knew what it was. He was the PERFECT fit to tell this story.
The shoot began and it couldn't have been a more perfect time. Covid was in full swing and Los Angeles was shut down. The Comedy Store where Phat Tuesdays took place, was also shut down and a lot of the comedians and actors were grounded which made availability great for shooting.
