GUY TORRY seeing his big brother JOE TORRY on "Def Comedy Jam" was truly the inspiration for him getting into stand-up comedy. Hearing his stories of the famed “Comedy Act Theater” planted seeds of doing his own night to show case Black comedians. When Guy saw the lack of industry presence in a club where they once came to scout talent. Torry molded "Phat Tuesdays" after " Def Comedy Jam" and "The Comedy Act Theatre".
CHRIS TUCKER was a crowd favorite of “PHAT TUESDAYS” from DAY ONE. His high energy and raw style made him likable. He would take the crowd from 0 to 60 in a matter of seconds. He was booked for the hit movie “The 5th Element” from his set at PHAT TUESDAYS when it was in “The Belly Room” He was a staple of “PHAT TUESDAYS” and definitely helped put it on the map. The film furthered blew Chris up and. his acting career took from that.
Cedric was already on his way to his destiny. He would visit LA from St. Louis where he and the TORRY’S where from and he would make PHAT TUESDAYS one of his top priorities on his destination list to hit. He was also a crowd favorite at the PT and worked on some of his most classic bits at there. He credits PT for sealing the deal for a few of his projects. He always showed Guy love by gracing the stage and validated PHAT TUESDAYS as a night that was top tier.
LUENELL The "PHAT TUESDAYS" audience adored her. She was real, she was raw and she was funny as hell. She was one of the few females who could command that stage. She was also a favorite among comedians because when she live in Oakland, she hosted a public access show and would invite any comedian on to promote their brand and their show. She was and still is one of the most multi-talented comedians male for female.
This kid was coming to "PHAT TUESDAYS" before he was even old enough to vote, drink alcohol or even get drafted into the military. He was young, he was ambitious and he was talented. Guy Torry invited him to perform at "PHAT TUESDAYS" as long as he was accompanied by an adult. Nick Cannon checked all those boxes and was there religiously soaking in all the wisdom and knowledge of the comedy game and ended up getting discovered after one of his sets.
They way JB Smooth milked comedy bits, if he was a farmer, he’d the #1 distributor of milk in the country. No one out squeezes the funny out of a joke than him. JB would have that "PHAT TUESDAYS" crowd in a freenzy. They would laugh uncontrollably and you would have thought that you were at a rave concert they way everybody would jerk back and fourth from laugher. His story telling was epic and his energy was nonstop. he. Would put his foot on the gas and would not let up until he said; “Good Night, I’m JB Smooth”.
FLAME MONROE
“PHAT TUESDAYS” was the comedy night where Black comedians could come and be themselves. Comedians didn’t have to censor themselves like they did In mainstream rooms. That went for those who were also of the Trans and Gay communities as well. PT didn’t judge you by your gender or pronoun even before recognizing those communities were a thing. Flame Monroe found it difficult to get booked in most of the Black ran rooms. “PHAT TUESDAYS played “funny-tism” over favoritism. “Phat Tuesdays” cared more about what you did on stage more than what you were doing in your bedroom as long as it was legal.
RUSSLE PETERS
was NOT Black or American. He hails from Canada. He would frequent “The Comedy Store” and was around for PHAT TUESDAYS and witnessed the importance of such a night. He was inspired by. PT and returned to his hometown of Toronto, Canada and launch his own version of “PHAT TUESDAYS” giving comedians there a platform to showcase and hone their comedic sets. In the spirit of PT, he understood. The assignment and remains to one of the most successful and beloved comedians today.
CRAIG ROBINSON
The multi-talented CRAIG ROBINSON who is just as great of musician as he is a comedian. He combined those two gifts and would amused and impress the “PHAT TUESDAYS” audience whenever he performed. He was an enjoyable change of pace from the usual PT comedians. He would captivate that audience and made them appreciate his style of comedy that didn’t disappoint. It made the line-up a more diverse style that made PT different from the usual Black audience.
REGINA KING
is NOT a Stand-Up comedian but she IS funny and a HUGE fan of comedy. She frequented “PHAT TUESDAYS” and would bless the night with her presence. She’s an actress who co-starred along side several comedians and would hold her own in any scene with them. She was a crowd favorite as a member of the audience and was one of the many STARS that would attend almost weekly. Comedy fans enjoyed seeing her Ms. King in the audience and appreciated her support of her friend GUY TORRY. A big art of “PHAT TUESDAYS” success was not only the talent on stage, but the talent who was in the house.
LIL REL
may not have graced the stage in the “hay day” of “PHAT TUESDAYS”, He did perform at the anniversary show GUY TORRY would produce in 2015 in downtown LOS ANGELES in a bigger venue. Rel Howery was put on Guy’s comedy radar by fellow St. Louisian Terrence Reynolds who used to book the talent for “PHAT TUESDAYS”. REL being a student of the game fit the mode of the type of comedians that performed at “PHAT TUESDAYS”. He continues to perform and release great comedy specials and raise the bar for himself and other comedians.
TIFFANY HADDISH
did not perform at “PHAT TUESDAYS” when it was at “The Comedy Store” but she did at one of the 20th Anniversary shows held in downtown LOS ANGELES in 2015. She learned the art of Stand-Up at the “LAUGH FACTORY” right down the street. In West Hollywood. Ms. Haddish used to get fake ID’S because she was too young to attend without the proper adult supervision. Once she was able to get in, she would learn what Black comedy shows were different than anything else out there. She continues to rip audiences as well as in the spirit of “PHAT TUESDAYS” she create her own comedy showcase show titled "THEY READY" on “SHOWTIME” giving a platform to comedians that needed someone of her power to bring attention to those comedians that were over looked.
STEVE HARVEY
STEVE HARVEY never performed at PHAT TUESDAYS but he was there. Steve, Cedric, Bernie Mac and Guy Torry were all traveling on the KINGS OF COMEDY. The "KANGS" came to PHAT TUESDAYS to help me celebrate my 30th BIRTHDAY. Steve would attend other times as well. You can catch Steve in the docu-series and hear what he had to say about PHAT TUESDAYS and comedy rooms he came up in like PHAT TUESDAYS.
JAY PHARAOH
JAY never performed at PHAT TUESDAYS but what comedian around the country did not hear about it. Comedy clubs like THE COMEDY STORE around the country like; THE IMPROV, THE FUNNY BONE, THE COMEDY ZONE and many Moore started their own version of "PHAT TUESDAYS" which provided Black comedians a platform to perform and work out material in an "A" room. This allowed comedians like JAY to work out and build their acts.
KYM WHITLEY
GUY TORRY and KYM, started comedy aroound the same time. KYM came u through the racks and performed at some of the same comedy club and nights that GUY did. KYM went on to be inspired and create her own version of PHAT TUESDAYS with veteran comedian BUDDY LEWIS. They would start a night in NORTH HOLLYWOOD at a middle eastern restaurant on Wednesday nights called WHACKED OUT WEDNESDAYS. The night would become successful and ended up tuning into a full-time comedy club now called "THE HA HA CAFE"
DC YOUNG FLY
Veteran comedians who weren't in the PHAT TUESDAYS docu-series questioned me about why was DC YOUNG FLY in the series. Of course it was non of their business, but I explained to them why. ONE he's one oof the HOTTEST new comedians on the scene. TWO we addressed this new era of comedy. He's won of the faces of it. If we are going to have comedy harmony amongst the new generations, we must welcome them and unite. Also he's a true student of the game who respects the comics who came before him and kept the door open for his generation.
ANTHONY ANDERSON
ANTHONY ANDERSON started out doing stand-up comedy and ended up being one of this generations most talented comedic and dramatic actors as well as his quick wit and improv. ANTHONY started in Black comedy rooms and clubs like THE COMEDY ACT THEATRE. He would see the difference between the urban comedy scene and the main stream one. He understood the importance of a night like PHAT TUESDAYS. Although he abandoned stand-up when his acting career took off, he didn't abandon the genre. He would support rooms like PHAT TUESDAYS and go on to CO-HOST an urban night with veteran comedian ROYALE WATKINS called "MIXED TAPE COMEDY NIGHT" at GOTHAM COOMEDY CLUB in NEW YORK.
GUY TORRY
One of the major reasons why I wanted to doo this docu-series so that comedian's stories be heard. More importantly the BLACK ones. Comedians feel like we are one oof the most important genres oof the arts but the last respected. Our stories are rich in truth and pain, dark and light. We take all of this and make it funny. We give the world a different point of view, a funny one. We are healers, and philosophers, story tellers, and doctors. We are called upon to act, to be game show hosts, radio personalities and writers. I wanted PHAT TUESDAYS to be a success so that I can be trusted to tell more of our stories. They rich, they are colorful and they are necessary, and definitely important.
